Course Description

Designing London: 1750-2050

Instructor(s): Katie Hauser, Art History

A chronological and site-specific investigation of design in London, including objects and architecture. From the Wedgwood china company’s inauguration of division of labor and urban showrooms, to the Underground’s (subway) innovative design practices, and London’s unique concentration of Brutalist buildings, London (and Britain) has established itself as a key nexus for modern design with enormous influence globally. An interdisciplinary approach – that is particularly attentive to class issues – including art history, history, urban studies, architecture studies, gender studies, philosophy, and sociology will reveal complex modern London’s meaning, develop evidence-based visual analysis and writing skills, and challenge conventional understandings about urban London.
