Senior Composition Recital
Students wishing to present a recital of their own original compositions must undergo a review for approval in the semester prior to the recital. The review serves as the equivalent of the performance audition required of instrumentalists and vocalists.
REVIEW PROCESS
Materials
- A portfolio including at least two completed works in different media (with scores and recordings, including MIDI renderings).
- Drafts or excerpts of works intended for the recital program.
- A brief program outline listing projected repertoire and approximate durations.
Procedure
- The student will present their portfolio and program outline to a faculty panel that includes the composition advisor and at least one additional faculty member.
- The panel will evaluate the quality, scope, and feasibility of the proposed recital program.
- Approval is required before the student may schedule a recital date.
Expectations
- The recital should demonstrate originality, craft, and artistic depth at a level comparable to senior performance recitals.
- Students must have completed MU241–243 and at least two semesters of composition coursework.
- The program must be curated into a coherent 45- 60-minute presentation.
