Michael Van Winkle
Visiting Assistant Professor
                                       Areas of Expertise: Painting and Drawing
Michael’s paintings and drawings explore the meaning of familiar images, their relationship
                                             to abstraction and our collective imaginations. Using figures, still life objects,
                                             landscape spaces as well as abstract elements, they combine humor and earnestness;
                                             self-consciously contemplating the importance and absurdity of painting as a way of
                                             creating new meaning in the world.
His work has been exhibited in various venues including, Vox Populi Gallery in Philadelphia,
                                             PA, Underdonk in Brooklyn, NY, The Times Club in Iowa City, Collar Works Gallery in
                                             Troy, NY and in various international locations through the GIFC traveling exhibitions
                                             organized by 0-0 LA Gallery in Los Angeles. He’s been a resident artist at The Vermont
                                             Studio Center and The Elizabeth Murray Artist Residency.
In addition to his studio work, Michael uses a variety of visual means to connect
                                             with the local community; these include designing posters for regional events, collaborating
                                             with ceramicist Dawn Dishaw to produce highly decorated clay vessels as well as opening
                                             his studio to after school programs. Recently he has illustrated a children’s book
                                             written by his brother.
